Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, sono solo alcuni dei magnifici fiumi che scorrono all’interno del parco Catskill nello stato di New York.
E’ proprio da questa regione che, grazie a grandi pescatori e altrettanto grandi costruttori, nacque a cavallo tra 1800 e 1900 un vero e proprio stile di costruzione: il Catskill.
Theodore Gordon, Rube Cross, Harry Darbee, Art Flick, John Atherton, Walt e Winnie Dette sono tra i massimi esponenti di questo stile.
E’ grazie a Mike Valla, autore di diversi libri su dressing e cenni storici di questo magnifico stile, che mi sono avvicinato ed appassionato al Catskill-Style.
Le mosche in stile Catskill sono costruite generalmente su ami di buona misura, generalmente del n. 12; l’addome, particolarmente esile, è solitamente fatto con pelo animale (uno dei più usati è il topo muschiato) o con il quill di pavone spelato; nella maggior parte dei casi le ali sono in “Wood-Duck lemon barred”; l’hackle, assemblata con pochi giri di gallo rigido e pulito, è molto spesso di colore ginger o blue dun.
Le ali e l’hackle sono leggermente spostate indietro rispetto all’occhiello dell’amo, lasciandone così un tratto completamente libero per lasciar spazio al nodo del nylon, ma questo a discapito di un addome leggermente più corto.
Però ci sono anche delle eccezioni.
Lee Wulff, ad esempio, non usava molto il Wood-Duck e non era solito lasciare alcuno spazio libero dietro l’occhiello, nonostante tutto è un esponente di questo stile e credo che la sua mitica Royal Wulff sia una delle mosche più conosciute in assoluto.
Mi hanno sempre affascinato i montaggi classici, ma le Catskill, oltre ad essere delle mosche che appagano il costruttore, sono delle ottime mosche da pesca.
Questo stile mi ha letteralmente rapito. Quando mi metto al morsetto è come se riuscissi a sentire il tepore di quelle baracche di legno nei pressi del fiume, dove mi vedo intento a costruire mosche sorseggiando whisky, aspettando il giorno seguente per andare a pesca.
Diceva John McDonald, parlando di Theodore Gordon (l’autore della celeberrima Gordon Quill), vissuto per 25 anni sulle rive del Neversink:
“Non si saprà mai quale shock morale lo abbia portato dal vivo splendore di Delmonico a New York City ad una baracca su un torrente…”
Io non credo che Theodore Gordon abbia subito chissà quale shock, credo invece che abbia soltanto trovato il coraggio di fare quello che noi tutti sognamo di fare…
